The orphanage was just more than the building where she lived. She had a family of sorts here in the shape of the gang and helped look after the younger children and baked the days she could. She did have to go to school but even there the influence of the gang was felt. So sitting outside near the fence after a walk there was still plenty of time before curfew. Trainers, a black skirt and a red hoodie was her look but she used some of her flame power to see where she was going in the dark. Flame came from her right hand and lit her way in the darkness. The moon was full and this island was weird as she knew. Salem Yang

Being told he had to crash at an orphanage before he could become a full resident was strange, to say the least. A little offensive, too. He was a full-grown adult, even if he didn't have the papers to prove it! But, that wasn't the current issue. No, it was the moon looming overhead. Its glow had already seized control, and Salem was unable to seek appropriate shelter in time. One excruciatingly painful transformation later, no longer was he a man but a beast. A tiny. Fluffy. Beast. He supposed this was better than turning into a massive wolfman that acted only a hunter's instinct. At least this way he wouldn't be a threat to society. The black-and-tan Pomeranian shook out his pelt, releasing some of the tension that always built up during transformations. Now he needed to find a place to hide until sunrise. No thumbs meant no doors, so he was stuck outside. Or, maybe not. Catching the sight of a flame flickering in the darkness, he chased after it like a moth, only to run into the legs of a child. Sophie just about seen the little dog run towards her but couldn’t avoid the collision. Thankfully she didn’t fall that far and hadn’t accidentally set the dog on fire. So with her fire still under control she got a better look at the dog in question. “So cute” was her first words. Then noted the dog had no interest in attacking her so wondered if it was a stray. It still looked cute but it didn’t look ungroomed. Just natural so it couldn’t have been stray for long. She’d seen dogs in LA and the west slums that were practically feral and this dog wasn’t even close to that stage. “Are you hungry?” she posed cheerfully. She could sneak him food quite easily. Whoops! Sorry, kid! The Pomeranian shook himself off again, a quick recovery from the impact. A huff came out more like a sneeze, and the little dog began circling around the girl, sniffing. He had absolutely no idea who this kid was, but she smelled like the orphanage. That was good enough for him. He paused, ears perked and head tilting at the mention of hungry. The tail that curled over his backside started wagging. Yes, food, give. Sophie Chang

Sophie noted the dog got excited when hungry was mentioned. It probally was and with a smile she petted it after putting out the flames from her hand with a bit of thought and finger moving. Even when she wasn’t using her flame powers her touch felt warmer than normal people’s. She also ran at a higher body temperature. “Follow me then” she suggested. The way in wasn’t far and would be illuminated by street lights the closer you got. The orphanage also had its own grounds and already she knew where to hide him if needed. The younger children’s play ground and it had a wooden play house that wouldn’t be used till the next morning. Such a good boy. Salem Yang

Acting like a dog was degrading, but the forced transformation slowly ate away at reason and filled it with instinct. The Pomeranian let out a high-pitched bark and dropped down on his front paws. He took off after the girl, little legs easily overtaking her pace. He would pause and look back whenever that happened, only to turn around and bolt ahead once more. Sophie Chang

So the excitable dog did want to follow her. It was only a few minutes of walking until they arrived at the lit up front door. She flashed her keycard to get in but also needed the retina scan to confirm this. So inside they went. The first thing you’d see was the communal lounge and then the way off to the kitchen to the right and the other rooms to the left. Perhaps the others were doing different things as she couldn’t see anything else. As this dog seemed intelligent she could talk normally to him. Unlike most dogs who needed a lot more work to understand. “Find a spot to hide and I’ll be right back” she quietly suggested. And then off to he kitchen she went to get a bowl of water and to ponder what was vaguely close to pet food round here. She did located some finely minced pork and cut a little off it. Then using her own flame power cooked it in a little pan quite quickly. This meat would just have to do. So when she did emerge carrying the ceramic bowl of water and the broken up fried meat on a saucer she looked round for the dog. Salem Yang

Hide? Why would he hide? The difference in perspective made this the perfect time to explore, and his extremely heightened senses told him to sniff everything. While the girl went off to the kitchen, the Pomeranian shuffled around the lounge, nose to the ground, curled tail high. He paused here and there when a scent caught his attention or when his lowered head caused him to bump into the furniture. He almost wandered toward the kitchen when the wonderful smell of cooked meat wafted through the air. He stopped himself before his paws could carry him over, a small piece of reasoning reminding him that dog fur should not be found in the kitchen. Salem carried on with his exploration. He nosed open unlatched doors and poked his head into rooms before backing out. He shimmied under a couch, nearly got lost under there, and finally popped out the other side. Dust bunnies clung to his fur, and a shake of his pelt could only do so much. That was a matter for another time. The Pomeranian trotted up to the girl once she reappeared, sneezed from the dust, and sat down, head tilting with expectation. Sophie Chang

So returning to find a slightly dusty dog Sophie chuckled a little. “There you go. It’s the best I could do as we’ve no other dogs or cats here” she replied. Placing the bowl and saucer down she wondered why that was so. It’s hadn’t been discouraged but she’d been the youngest here when the orphanage opened. Now she wasn’t so this might just take time to change. She used a free hand to dust him down but it would take a proper brushing to do the job right. Salem Yang

Her best was more than enough for him. He could still recall a time back on the mainland when he had been forced to scavenge for scraps. Cooked meat on a plate? That would have been a luxury back then. The Pomeranian ignored the water and dove straight into the pork, not even acknowledging the hand trying to dust him off. The plate was polished clean within a minute, and he moved on for a quick lap at the water. Once done, he sat back and yawned. Sophie Chang

Since she hadn’t really looked after a dog before she only really knew the theory behind pets. Yes she knew the basic needs such as food, fluids and walks for dogs but this dog must have been hungry. Then a little yawn followed the drink. Which usually meant a nap. So following the theory and hoping to learn what to do along the way she quietly said “I’ll be back in a moment. Just need to clean up in the kitchen first”. Which wouldn’t take long but while she was gone the plan fell apart. One of the younger girls padded in with a Barbie doll in hand and spying a dog went over to him. Another person knowing was trouble. Salem Yang

One child left and another appeared, younger than the first. He didn't know what time it was, but it was definitely past this one's bedtime. Black ears raised, curled tail wagging in greeting at the little girl approached. This better not be one of those kids that liked to pull ears. Kids with grabby hands were the worst. Sophie Chang

The little barefoot girl in her pajamas called out not even trying to be quiet “fluffy doggy”and then got a closer look. Thankfully she didn’t pull at his ears. Sophie hearing that muttered something bad in Cantonese and feared this was busted open and quickly finished up what she was doing to see the girl trying to play with the dog. Shaking her head she told her to go back to bed. Now she needed to hide Salem. Thankfully the girl listened but she’d talk later on. “She’ll talk. You need to hide now” Sophie cautioned. “But I know where you can which is warm”. She should have known it wouldn’t have been this simple. Salem Yang

No ears were harmed, so the Pomeranian was receptive to the child's attempts to play. He bowed before jumping to the side, nuzzling at the hand that reached for him. Another jump, another play bow, and the older girl returned. Still bowed with his hindquarters raised, the black-and-tan dog turned his attention away from the youngest, who was promptly shooed away. Salem stretched out of his bow and shook more dust off his pelt. He could always hide under the couch again, but that would be highly inconvenient once dawn came. The Pomeranian huffed and turned his head, ears perked and eyes staring off in the distance. Sophie Chang

Now Sophie felt bad. She’d interrupted play time but while this dog was good to her she didn’t want to risk either party hurt when it came to a player two entering. “If only you were allowed to stay?” she posed “you’d have all the play mates in the world right here”. It sounded like a sad question. So she had to hide him and then look at this in the morning and the most obvious place was her room here. It was also the most obvious room to look in but at least he’d have a mat to lie in. She’d face the consequences from Gigi when they happened. So with her mind made up she looked back at the cute little fur ball. “You can stay in my room tonight but no getting on top of the bed and keep the noise down but we don’t have to go yet. It’s not bedtime yet” she added. So bringing the water bowl she went through the left door and then door that led to playground. There was a lot more outdoors inside the fence but this was the handiest. He could play for as long as he wanted. Salem Yang
