Madison hadn't regretted not going home in the summer. Two planned years on the island were going to be a much period if her new career worked out. Prior to this she'd been a coffee shop worker in New York while gained her degree. She'd also done similar work while doing the masters degree and felt settled here. She even had a little apartment now as she hadn't spent her time in dorms. This evening was her shift in the tennis courts and you could be teaching anybody depending on their level. She was wearing a regular length tennis dress in white that was sleeveless and left her shoulders bare. All the better for freedom of movement. Looking at the tablet she had in front of her while she relaxed in the staff area she looked over this evenings appointments list. There was only two sessions and the second one was more basic. New players needed more attention while the more experienced player could do most of the work herself. Judging from the notes recorded the first thing they'd need to work on was the serve. So far under arms serves only. The first session had went smoothly and wasn't exactly taxing for Madison. She could not believe that she was doing a recreational activity that was not painting. She had always known that she needed to get out of her box but this was an actual step towards it and that was a lot to do, but none the less she was going to do her best and take the lesson as it came. At least it was night which she did appreciate as she arrived. She spotted the woman that she assumed to be her instructor and almost turned around but the truth was she needed to get better at her game for that was a good friendship lesson as well. Madison seen the woman facing her then introducing herself. So this was Mallory and she was something about her that got her attention. Just what it was she'd know later on but there a lesson for Mallory first. "Yes I am your instructor. My name is Madison and I've been told you need to work on serving for now" she replied in a warm friendly voice and smiled a little. She actually prefered working with new players and that felt more satisfying to her. You got to see the improvement over time and peoples sense of achievement. "So we'll hit a few balls to warm up and then you can show how you serve at the moment" she added. They had an hour and she'd like Mallory back for another session later. Perhaps she should have talked to Alice about it being snowboarding or jet skiing rather since tennis seemed to have more coordination than she had first realized. "Alright, and nice to meet you." The truth was that she had thought that it would be a male tennis instructor but she was glad for the difference. Madison considered the question from her pretty student. You normally had a man doing this type of work but there were a few women also doing coaching on the island. "We can start with serving to space as you also need to get used to making a legal serve. Then we can work on the action using the wall later on before you serve to me. Serving is a more of a natural process and it can be a repeatable one. It just takes a bit more work" she cheerfully said. You needed a few different types of serves depending on the match situation and it wasn't all about trying to blast aces. "We can start with you just hitting back throw downs and then we'll start properly". A tennis serve was like a golf swing in a way. The language of tennis was so foreign to her that she nodded and was thankful that she had googled the basics a little earlier. "Okay that sounds good enough," she said. Man the things that she did for friendships were crazy but she also knew that she needed to get out of her shell and be a better person when it came to getting to know people. As these would be gentle throws for Mallory it was still possible to have a conversation while she did this. With a tube of balls in one hand she waited until Mallory was ready and threw the first one underarm. It wasn't important to hit these but it did get you moving and ready for the next stage. "We open at 4am and close at 1am. So it's quite busy here. I also can teach gymnastics and I enjoy what I do" she cheerfully mused as the warm up continued. Down came another lobbed ball which would ease Mallory into this. Everybody had a good time for their schedule and there were plenty of early birds and night owls. Sometimes it was hard to concentrate for Mallory not because she did not want to but because she much more preferred to talk but she was going to try to do both as she watched the tennis balls and swung as best as she could, actually hitting it. That was good or so she told herself as she waited for another one when Madison was ready. "I see," she said. "Gymnastics?", she said a bit off guard as she took a tumble towards the net and spoke. "That's actually pretty nice," she said as she gently stood up. Luckily her tumble was not too bad so she was okay. Still she took a minute to dust off her knees and stood up. Normally Mallory would make a joke about how Madison must be pretty flexible but she did not, but she did think about it. Madison wasn't on the clock all day long but she found mornings less busy and evenings usually quite busy. It just depended on what shift she had to work. She looked concerned and moved to the net when Mallory stumbled but seen the dust down happen quickly. So all seemed well. So she moved back to the line in the middle of the court and got another ball ready. Mallory had a bit to say too and she was ready to go again. Throwing the ball down she replied "I've done gymnastics as long as I've played tennis but neither was a life aim. Having them as a career further down the line is a happy accident. Actually I'm single. I left an ex-girlfriend or two back in New York and never got lucky here while I was doing my masters degree. It's not because of work". "Oh," she said as she straightened out her knee and arms in a bit of a stretch. "I went to new york once before I got here. I absolutely loved their botanical museum or whatever it is there, the big plant conservatory," she said as she returned the ball with a swing of her racket. "Fucking shit, I hit one," she said. "I'm not pro but it's better than I thought it would be honestly." She had loved gymnastics as a kid but as an adult she had not thought about it as much. So Mallory had been to New York before. At least the trip might have been educational. Then she happily exclaimed as she'd hit a passing shot that would have been hard to stop. That part of her game would develop along with the serving it seemed. Then Mallory had a suggestion about going to a ballet as a thank you. Madison smiled back not expecting this. Quiet gymnastics was another way to describe ballet. Both led to dance and a floor routine was a dance in all but name. A friend was mentioned and that brought Madison back to the person who had originally booked this in. A woman called Alice. "That was a good shot" she replied in an encouraging manner and added "ballet sounds like a plan if there's a production going to happen here". This lesson was surprising already and now they could move on. "Lets move onto building your serve" she beamed and moved gracefully round the court so she was beside Mallory on the serving line her own racquet in hand. A quick demonstration showed Mallory what was possible as Madison landed a serve on the base line on the other side of the court. "Lets start with a dry run. Just toss the ball up but don't hit it yet". This was about little steps. Not just in tennis but already Madison was feeling something towards Mallory. Perhaps she might get lucky after all? She honestly had no idea why she was wanting to make conversation especially since most the time she just talked and then did not really step out to make friends. The truth was that she was okay at it but still. Madison was cute, yeah that was it. Cute women tended to hold her attention longer though she did not know if the whole relationship thing worked, not that she would ever jump that fast into something so serious. Mallory was honestly like a cat, liked to play but hard to keep entertained for long. "If this island does not have a production I will put one on myself." Seriously she could just get people to dance, maybe. She nodded and spoke. "Got it," she said as she tossed the ball up, down, up, down." Was this what guys felt like when they did it to themselves? Madison observed the height the ball was reaching as Mallory tossed it up. For everybody it was different followed. "You need to keep your feet still initially and then move as you complete the serve. Like so". She kept the friendly voice going as she showed her student a slowed down serve. You'd know when you needed to bring the arm through to complete the action. Too late and you'd hit the net. Too early you'd put the ball in the wrong place. "Now feel free to hit the ball once its above your head. Timing is everything". She smiled hearing what Mallory had to say about putting a production on for her if one wasn't coming here. Could she do that? "Sometimes you get ballet in the movie theatres. Same way concerts and opera get there" she said looking back at Mallory. She'd seen concerts that way before while in New York. Whom would have ever thought that tennis was so instructional, though Mallory supposed that she should not be so surprised. Everything was it just was hard to know exactly how to do it for you until you were taught. "Okay," she said as she listened to Madison. She slowly started to follow through with hitting the ball as they talked and she still looked at the motion. Mallory knew that she would never be a tennis pro but it did not mean that she could not be better at it than she was before. "Do you like movie theatres?" Wow it was truly sad that she could not remember the last time that she was at one. Progress seemed to be happening this evening. Mallory was hitting the ball in the warm ups and now she had her first serves under her belt. Or would once she'd done some more. "I do like going to movies. It just takes a while for a film to get here and its not just the five days by ship" Madison mused before handing Mallory another ball to complete another serve with. The one Madison knew about was a small outlet with only one screen; a real old school affair and it was a different film at the same time every day running round a weekly schedule. Too small to even host a ballet broadcast. She'd need a dvd instead and more often than not a film would turn up on DVD before it even got to that one screen cinema. "I doubt we're on the international release schedule so what gets here is quite hit and miss. The last thing I watched was 'last night in soho'. A British made film about a fashion student who can sense ghosts and two stories separated by time. one in the 1960's and the other in modern day. The 60's sound track was what kept it going and I'd recommend it. It's more of a thriller and mystery" she added seeing another serve go down. The landing spot wasn't so crucial right not; as long as Mallory was getting them over the net and keeping them in play. She needed to adjust Mallory's standing position slightly with a little touch here and there. "This might work better. Keep the serving area in mind otherwise the serve won't count in a game".
