Anyway as this discussion kept going they broke of for the fruit salad. Sophie looked happy tonight and the work she put into the orphanage was tiring at times. Perhaps that was the path in front of her but she did have other things in front of her. “They don’t talk about this stuff in school” she replied. “People need to know this”. She took a second to push her hands through the blond strands of hair. "Kids are so much more aware these days than they were when I was younger but this is good because the world is different and people no matter how young they are do need to know that sometimes for the most part things are never going to be as they appear." Even Rebecca laughed a little. “Yes Sophie it is” she remarked. “And if it’s not me it’ll be Gigi there”. So until she was eighteen and an adult there’d still be cringy things to deal with in terms of school. At least Sophie would get the full school programme and come out with a certificate and the chance to go to the islands university. “It’s also not that bad” she added to reassure her. Sophie looked resigned to this but at least school shopping might be more fun. So dinner moved on another bit after this political discussion. There should be a lot more like it and she was liking Alicia as well. That was clear and while she never expected to see her mother with a girlfriend given what she’d been told about her she still was happy these days. “I want more skirts for going to school” she suggested. Now it was Rebecca’s turn to look surprised. “More skirts my darling? Alicia is right about school being fun but I should warn you that boys are trouble but can be fun. I’m not saying you have to ignore them but deal with them on your terms not theirs. I found out just how much fun your father was but that’s another story for when you’re older” she replied. “How can boys be trouble and fun?” Sophie posed sounding puzzled. She knew her friends from the gang, Rocco and others she was getting to know like Juana. “Yes I do want to be more like a girl. Aunt Lucy always picked out things that made me look like a boy”. Now she did wonder what her mother meant but she was clearly smart enough to have the talk with her. “They’re going to be doing little league too”. She took a few bites of her food during this exchange to keep herself thinking about these kinds of questions because she did realize that this was not really her place to interject in but kids did eventually do things. "Hmm," she said as she was still thinking. "People in general might not always want for us what we want for ourselves." She had noted that Sophie was at that age where things happened regardless and not just sexual things but feelings. Her age was a time of confusion eventually no matter how much she did know but she could be the type to get through it easy. "Boys can be nice but honestly they usually hit their hormones first but still lack maturity. Eventually no matter what people in general and their bodies have urges that books and things can not satisfy so one has to be careful even in small things. Connections are sometimes formed with or without sex and a lot of times those without sex can be trouble." She shrugged. "I honestly looked like a board before puberty and then I got pretty and well look at me now," she said as she laughed. "It didn't come without a price though so just be careful.
