Alice hadn't grown up with much science round her so found this truly fascinating and the engines looked huge. Even bigger than a regular engine you'd find in her jeep but perhaps similar size to an aircraft jet engine. At least for now.
"So the water the craft is on is also the fuel it will use. And as long as the electrodes can be powered you'll never need to refuel" she posed. She grew up with the US military round her so heard things but this would be truly ground breaking.
"My boyfriend works in ARI. You might actually run into him on your days there" she added with a little smile. The guy who had claimed her heart.

"From everything we've looked at, there are two things holding us back. First, the faster we test the prototype, the more stress the water itself puts on the pump jets - what we call the impeller tubes there in the picture. Unlike air, water isn't compressible so the faster you go, the more pressure the water exerts because unlike air, it doesn't react the same way. Too much pressure and you risk causing cracks in the water tubes, potentially even the hull itself where the impeller tubes are. "Ironically, that's what ultimately killed the Japanese project back in the 90's - everytime they got up past 15 knots or so, there was so much pressure butting up against the hull that when they went back to the dock, they found microfractures within the outside of hull, especially around the tube areas on the Yamato. "The other problem is the liquid helium - at 425 degrees below zero, helium's a hard substance to handle; you have to to handle the cryogenics the same as if it were liquid hydrogen or liquid nitrogen and the pressurized cylinders they're contained in leak...you can have a bad day. Cracking the hull of a boat was generally a bad idea but knowing the problem should by rights lead to a solution. At least she hoped it would as she listened intently to the science involved. “You don’t want to have a bad day on a boat” she mused.
“His name is Lucas Roberts” she added. “I think he works in a team as I do bring lab tests there from time to time”.

There was things that Lucas couldn't tell her about his job; just like she couldn't tell him details of cases but it was clear it was important work. So she pondered the question briefly and replied "he's part of a brain trust in ARI and he's the third brain. That's how he described it. They look at ideas and figure out if they are practical science or not; if they are they'd work up the idea the same way I'd work up a case so others can take it on". It was the simplest way to explain this but she didn't know much more than that.

“Perhaps I might but you’re more likely to run him into ARI so picking his brain might help you along” she replied back. Then drank more coffee. Science had so many applications and that included the experimental. Quite a lot of the time that was all Lucas could hint at.

“You should look him up and ask him opinions then” Alice replied. All she knew for sure was as she drank coffee and snacked was Lucas might have ideas that could help. The other thought test was starting to form was why she felt tired and needing food with her coffee breaks. A question that would be resolved later on after a police raid.
So rolling on a month Alice was back here in the process of recovery not just from her wounds but the shock of pregnancy. At least she could try and finish parts of her degree ahead of time. So here she was again in the library starting to show.

The past four weeks had been quite eventful. As least as far as Alice was concerned. She’d been involved in more frontline raids with her partner and he’d seen her being wheeled into hospital after one went wrong but which was successful. That was when she found out she was pregnant and was off duty for two weeks to recover from her wounds.
This was her regular university day as Michelle found her. “Not just distracted Michelle. I got injured during a raid and brought into hospital. Then found out I was going to have a baby. So I guess that counts as a shock” she quietly said.

"I didn't know either until I was told. I was just feeling a bit tired and hot while dealing with cases. Then this raid got really messy having to clear it room by room. I'm back at work doing a desk job for now.
I'll know more after the first scan is done but its early stages" she replied appreciating the touch. It wasn't just a shock but the start of a great adventure.

Alice could see that Michelle looked stunned as well but she offered to help her fellow Floridian all the same. "Michelle I really appreciate that. Lucas is getting used to the idea too" she replied. Right now getting around was easy; it was the heat and the nausea that bothered her.
