Setting down her backpack, Michelle ordered a coffee and quipped, "The sea breezes are coming in fast it seems," pausing as a long breeze swept through the outdoor booths like the one they were sitting in. "So, what classes are you taking this semester, Alice?" Alice Seraphim

Alice ordered her coffee too and heard the question and the comment. The breezes felt so relaxing and it was a feeling she wasn’t getting while on duty lately. It was a lot of piecing together information to get a few minutes of life threatening action. She did have a partner who knew what she didn’t and it did feel like they were a joined pair. They both could deal with the danger though she was the impulsive one.
“So far just Horticulture. At some point in my life I would like to grow things but I doubt the world will let me be a farmer” she replied softly. “But what got you into oceanography?” she posed.

“But what got you into oceanography?”"A love of the oceans for starters," Michelle said, taking several sips of coffee. "Knowing what makes the oceans tick, what drivers the currents as they do, those things. What really made me love the oceans was all the time I spent swimming in its' waters, staying down for hours at a time when the average person would've drowned after just a few minutes. "Don't ask me how but the water is like a second home; I can swim and swim and not worry ab out getting tired; I can dive down into the near depths and not worry about the pressure of the ocean above. There's just a freedom out there that you really just can't explain." Alice Seraphim

“I suppose you don’t need to question your ability as it comes naturally. You have freedom in water the same way I have in the air” Alice replied smiling a little. Then sipped her own coffee. “I can still get tired unlike you”. Michelle was likeable and while they grew up in different ways they did belong to the same state. A place that was unusual even in the USA so living here seemed like the next logical thing to do.
“Do you get to see plenty of sharks?” she curiously posed. She really had to get out on the sea more. Even fishing would be relaxing though she had been sea diving.

"Yeah, I see a few," Michelle replied, "but when they see another apex predator like me swimming nearby the sharks usually tend to mosey away. Its' just exhilarating to swim and swim and not worry about the world above, you know?" Alice Seraphim

“I can understand that. I’ve dived before and wouldn’t mind doing it more” Alice mused. Her wings didn’t interfere with swimming which she found surprising. “There’s always a bigger predator” she added chuckling.
She reminded herself that it would be a good idea to go diving again. Perhaps ask Lucas to go with her.

“I can understand that. I’ve dived before and wouldn’t mind doing it more” "We'll do that sometime," Michelle replied. "You bring the swimsuits, I'll bring my birthday suit," a broad smile across her lips as she drank from her coffee cup. Alice Seraphim

Alice liked that happy smile. Now they just needed to fix the day and time they’d do this. It couldn’t be one of her university days and she was still busy in work.
“I don’t have the tanks but I can bring a swimsuit and a snorkel. Plus flippers” she replied her smile almost matching Michelle’s. Lucas held her heart but she could still do things with other people. If she wanted to do this more regularly she’d have to get her own basic gear.

"That'll work; first break of the semester sounds like a good opportunity," Michelle said. "There's some coral reefs I've been wanting to look at and a trip out sounds perfect." Alice Seraphim

Alice nodded and replied “we can do that then”. Everyone would be off on the same break but doing different things. It might just be them but you couldn’t tell.
The future however was unknown and she knew there was others she needed to catch up with. Life had gotten in the way and she felt bad about that.

"Underneath those coral reefs are all sorts of underwater tunnels; one of the things we've been studying over the past year are the currents going through them. Did they cause the tunnels to form? Do they help or hinder sea life? "Could we use the information we find to build better and faster and more environmentally-friendly propulsion systems? All sorts of questions down there to answer, Alice," Michelle said as the waiter brought a plate of apple empanadas to their table. Alice Seraphim

What Michelle spoke of sounded amazing. So she’d see some hero worship in her expression on her face. Her education though complete was more interrupted at the end and there was no high school diploma to show for it. So she did have questions and observations.
“Obviously they must be natural as coral is old. And those are very big questions to try and answer. A new propulsion source would change the world and the change will come from here” she replied. She could fix the engine on a jeep so understood the basics of a petrol engine. So Michelle’s ideas might even develop those further.

"I mean, imagine if we could power boats without having to haul large amounts of fuel to power the engines and propellers," Michelle continued, pausing only long enough for the waited to set down a plate of apple empanadas on the table. "The beauty of a magnetohydrodynamic or MHD drive, Alice, is that as long as you can power the electromagnetic impellers that surround the channels that the water goes through, the water will shoot through the channel allowing you to steer and propel the boat a lot faster than we can currently do. " The Japanese actually built such a propulsion system back in the late 90's but never got further than a demonstration project; if our work with ARI bears fruits we'll go well past the demonstration stage, possibly even create a working model for the Island to use." Alice listened and could imagine it. It was also something that could improve the island and the world but first they needed more work. At least Michelle could see progress in a clear manner. She couldn’t see much in the way of progress in her field apart from a slight drop in some kinds of crime. Yet she had to keep going as she was seeing people freed from traffickers and other positive signs.
Seeing the Apple Empanada’s she asked “could I have one? And if you could prove it worked we’d be ahead of the world and show them what we can do”. So this was what she was doing with ARI.
“Some days are easier in my job. You aren’t always being shot at but sometimes you see people freed and even surprises” she added.

“could I have one? And if you could prove it worked we’d be ahead of the world and show them what we can do”. "Sure, help yourself," Michelle said, holding her hand out to explain the science behind an MHD drive. "Essentially an MHD drive works on the principle that when you cross an electric field with a magnetic source while running a fluid through it - in this case, water - the forces from the electric and magnetic parts will repulse the water away with great amounts of force. Here's a mockup, *she said, pausing to get her tablet out and bring up a model ARI was working on. "Water flows through each of the six tubes; surrounding each tube are jackets of superconducting metals - in our case, titanium and copper - supercooled with liquid helium down to near absolute zero, -425 degrees Fahrenheit. This keeps the metal supercooled to the point where they have virtually no resistance to electricity. Electric current passing through the jackets creates enormous magnetic forces around the tubes, akin to the forces around an MRI machine. "As water passes through the six tubes, electric currents passing from electrode plates inside the tubes cause the water to be forcefully expelled through the exit side of the tubes. Our hope is to try and get a working mockup out on the water sometime in early 2024." Alice Seraphim
