Given the OSE sea blockade and not many airplanes getting in except for essential supplies the island needed it made sense that the folk who lived in the slumtown would find a way of using what was dumped there as the ultramodern city got built. So these buildings which were left over from previous habitations still got used to their fullest. This afternoon after school was over Sophie was going to the South Side to pick up an order she'd already paid for via pickpocketing of richer folk from the city and some of the debit cards and little pieces of jewellery being converted to hard currency. It was good practice to only take a little as only taking some got less notice. Notice from the Ashford PD was troublesome to say the least. This was a rough place to live and she couldn't always count on her still limited oddity ability. She knew exactly what her late fathers 'family business' was and if she couldn't get a gun she'd get the next best thing; two sets as one of these would be for Jack since they suited his abilities too. If he was still going to be exploring round here he'd need to be equipped for the task. Her gift to him if a rather unusual one. So the 'recycling centre' was a large building that not even the Ashford PD tended to bother with as a lot of legitimate activities happened here. There was also weapon workshops which turned spring steel and old car metal panels into practical defence and attack weapons. Even a basic gang knife came from here. She was getting throwing knives which could be easily replaced if they got lost. Her late father had told her that her real mother could make them out of flames but Sophie didn't think she'd ever be that powerful. He didn't live to see the genesis of her own ability but certainly knew what could be achieved. She also knew her aunt wouldn't mind her being proactive about this. Sawyer Dune

Sawyer was still adjusting himself to island life and island time and the slums. His last drug addiction binge had been a whole month ago which was good for him and the truth was he was young enough that he was trying to stay clean though it was hard given his surroundings. At this moment he was down at what he called the junk pile going through it, something not many people even from the slums did and he had finished grabbing the ends of a plunger and the handle of a mop for his days work and spotted someone. He wondered what they were doing here as he cleared his throat. "What are you doing?" he asked as he looked around, his eyes a little jumpy here and there. Sophie Chang

A junk pile was also the source of a lot of the things that ended up being re-used or recycled here. It wasn't just large items like cars or machinery. It had crossed her mind that this would be a good source of material for a longer knife that she could craft at least partly with her own power. It didn't need to be good looking; just able to be used. She heard a voice as she was about to go into the building and looked round. The only person who could have spoken to her from that direction was the teenager looking back at her. "Just collecting a parcel from there" she said pointing to the door she was planning in going through. It had been a sliding glass door at one point but was now a half stuck one instead. She seen what he'd managed to find and added sounding curious with a little cant of her head "you never know what you'll find in there. You could make those handles good and sharp and it wouldn't take long if you need help". Weapons were always needed and mainly for self defence. A sharpened pole was quite potent in both modes. "At least you have a plan," he said. He found that was so much more better than standing around with your thumb up your ass. "I guess I could use a little help," he said as he could feel his body starting to twitch. He was going to beat needing a hit off of his junkie habit at least for a little while longer. "Was the parcel you got worth it?" he asked trying to put his mind somewhere else for the moment. Sophie Chang

Looking over to the older boy she gently said "I still have to collect it and it should be worth it. I was promised good workmanship. I won't be long". And she wasn't as about five minutes later Sawyer could see her leaving with a wrapped up parcel she was putting in her backpack. It wasn't just for her either. "See I said I wouldn't be long and things were as promised" she added strolling over to him. She knew she could always make a quick exit most of the time if she needed it. So far she didn't see the need too. She found true trust took a longer time to form but she could normally get an impression of somebody fairly quickly. "So what do you need help with?" she offered. And she would help if she was able too. Sawyer Dune

This girl was an odd one for sure as he watched her and he took a second to think about the situation. It was the greatest and yet most confusing thing that he had seen in quite a while. "Okay," he said as he watched her coming towards him. For the hell what he did not know as he walked back not to really be in her space. "I think we will be good as long as we keep this distance. I need some metal sheets, do you know if any are around here." He was going to invent the greatest thing ever. Sophie Chang

Just mentioning metal sheets could mean a few different things. Could it mean solid iron fences, did it even need to be solid or could the sheets have been something else at some point in time? So noting he needed a bit of room she'd respect that and then asked a question while looking quite curious. "I'm pretty sure you'd find some here. How big do these metal sheets need to be for starters?" she posed as her mind ticked over. The first thing that came to mind was the metal panels of washing machines, fridges and the like. Sometimes these were internal but not always. Then there was also car bodies which she could certainly cut down to size. So while she waited for an answer she balanced on an upturned old sofa before she walked to the next piece of large furniture in the junk pile. Just like the way a cat would balance as it moved as she got a better look at what was here. She did spot a cooking stove that used to be powered by electric but was it big enough? Sawyer Dune

"Half the normal size," he said. He was trying to imagine it but if half was not enough he could always come back and get more. He did wonder what she would want in the end though because he did not know anyone who simply did something just to be nice to you. "Thanks for helping me," he said as one of his eyes involuntarily rolled in the back of his head. It was a hard habit that was hard to break but he went on as if it had not just happened. Still he took a second. "Do you just like helping random strangers?" Sophie Chang

"I see an electric stove slightly buried in there. Would that be big enough?" Sophie asked pointing this out to Sawyer. She also looked at the way the pile seemed to be structured as she concentrated. Her flame sword came to life and it not only flamed. It also burned white like a welders torch. So making her first careful cut it freed up the stove without collasping anything else in that section. She might need a second stroke but she needed to know if he could reach it or not. "It's my pleasure to help. If we can't help each other here then who will? But I can get away if things look dangerous" she added with a smile but the fact she had burning weapons as her gift and she could fight dirty put things slightly more in her favour. It didn't cost anything to be helpful but you still had to be careful as she kept balanced while adjusting her footing. Sawyer Dune

He took a second and looked and nodded as he spoke. "That would work just fine," he said. He laughed when she said it was her pleasure to help because he could tell that she had that little kid way of viewing things, something he sadly had missed out on but he was not going to take it out on anyone but himself and still he nodded. "Yeah you have a point, we all have to look out for ourselves sadly enough." Sophie Chang

People could help you out but you still had to do your own job first of all. He was trying to make something and Sophie had pointed out a donor stove. Perhaps a small ripple effect in this particular pond but it was a start. She noted what he'd said and smiled a little as she kept on moving in the junk pile after cutting of her flaming sword. Each step was careful but apart from one little wobble at the beginning she looked safe and secure. Now she got a better look round the other side of the stove and rapped it with her knuckles to listen to the noise it made. It certainly sounded metallic with a sharper sound than iron or heavier steel would have. So it was the thin steel which could be cut even without welding gear. "So whats's your name and what project did you have in mind. I'm Sophie" she asked. She still had some innocence but not much; this isle and it's slum town was still filled with adventure for her as she hadn't too many shocks and close calls just yet. Sawyer Dune

Sawyer was the type of kid who had seen way too much before his time and thus it had turned him into something that he did not quite know how to handle but for a kid he was doing his best. "I'm Sawyer," he said. He did chuckle a bit about both their names starting with an S as he spoke. "Oh time travel." He said it so confidently like he almost truly believed in it. "I intend to be able to time travel and go back to fix some screw ups I have made in my life." Sophie Chang

Time travel wasn't the most weird thing Sophie had heard of since she started living here. Given what oddities could do was widely varied and to different standards she did think it was possible but it sound easier to try and make the present and future better. "Hello Sawyer. That does sound interesting but why don't you go to ARI? They might be able to help you out" Sophie cheerfully advised; but this might not help Sawyer. So added "If you don't want them involved what else would you need other than metal? You can also try and fix the future in other ways." Fixing the future was hard but more likely. Not that she could offer the opportunity to him at this point in time but she could be there to help him out. Sawyer Dune

"That big research place?" No no no. "I will pass," he said as he took a second and then sighed. "I do not trust a place that is so friendly on an island of people that can do numerous amounts of things. If that makes me close minded then I guess I will need to be plus I'd rather research it all on my own." These positive girls he had been around were so strange. "By doing what recycling?" he asked as he laughed. Come on it was funny. Sophie Chang

"If you want to do it on your own it's your choice" Sophie replied as she moved back to the starting point she'd had before she started to move round the junk pile; all still balancing as she jumped off the sofa and landed on her feet. Hearing Sawyer laugh she smiled a little and added "What recycling? The resources to build a future aren't found on the junk pile. It's what you're able to do yourself with the other things you find that matter along with the abilities you have. Contacts and people you can trust also count". Sawyer Dune
