Maeve Lightfeather was on her second day here. The first day was spent recovering from a long flight from London to New York and then to Ashford airport but by the evening David and Peyton had taken her out for dinner. Today David and Peyton were both going to work at the same time but Ella didn't need to go into day care when her grandma was here. So grandma kept her amused and by the time it was mid morning Ella was experimenting with chubby crayons in a colouring book from the UK. David also told his mother about a friend who might call over later. So chilling with a mug of iced tea she kept an eye on her toddling grand daughter. The last thing she wanted was to have to clean red crayon of the walls. Oliver Dougard

The cases so far were light so he had decided to go over to the Lightfeather apartment. He had not gotten out or around to know very many people here but he did not mind that since he thought it would come in time. He knocked on the door not truly knowing what to expect. "David are you around I had an idea." Maeve Lightfeather

It was Sparky that noticed the knock and he barked his little bark once he got to the door. Seeing Ella was occupied Maeve left her tea down and looked through the little spy hole and hearing this was a caller for David she opened the door. Oliver would see a small older woman who looked in her early 50's and a small dog looking up at him. "David is at work right now. Is there something I can help you with" she curiously asked. She certainly didn't sound local even with the diverse makeup of this islands population. A Dublin accent which she'd never lost was certainly unusual and David sounded English; totally different from his mother. Oliver Dougard

It certainly was no one he was expecting but he remembered a little talk about David's mother coming in though he was not sure that this was her but why else would she be here. "I was looking for David but that is fine." He slightly noticed the same little girl from his first outing and how she did not seem to be afraid. "You must be a family member?" he asked. "I am; I'm his mother" Maeve replied. "I came over early to make sure my son and grand daughter were getting on fine. She's a natural with crayons. Who should I say was looking for him?" Then Ella heard all this and the curious toddler that she was left her crayons to see what was going on. She'd mainly figured out walking and rarely stumbled; so much so her stroller could be left behind more often. "Nana, up" she said. The beginnings of language was a wonderful thing. Oliver Dougard

"My name is Oliver, nice to meet you. I was going to see if he wanted to come out and see a few things today but it's okay." There was always another day though now what to do and then he noticed the toddler. "Oh so you are on duty with the little one?" Even he had noticed how curious she was and he thought that was a good thing. "The little one seems nice but curious don't you think?" Maeve Lightfeather

"I'll send David a text to let him know you called over" Maeve replied. So her son was making friends here. That was good. "She'd have been going to day care if I hadn't been here but we were going to go out later on. Perhaps get some lunch and then go to the sports centre. David always has something ready for Ella anyway" she added. "Ella is very curious; just like David was. I'm sure she'll be a scientist some day. Why don't you come in?". An observation based a few factors but this island had a lot more opportunities. Oliver Dougard

"I imagine having a job and coming home to a kid is no easy task so it must be better if you are able to have them something to do. I find that for a lot of people family keeps them going." His sister was enough in a way for him to know that you just needed one member to keep going but multiples he imagined made it easier. "She does seem to have a curiosity that I do not see in many kids." His kid lack was by choice, he could see other people happy with it and that was enough besides his job was a lot. "Okay," he said as he carefully went in. "She seems like a well rounded young girl which is always good right?" Maeve Lightfeather

She knew all about that but it was easier as she lived above the post office. Her break from her son was when he went to school and school clubs so hearing there was a fully organised daycare system was surprising to her. It did seem to work so she wasn’t complaining. “Daycare seems to work very well here. David also said there’s organised sporting activities as well. He played rugby for his school so I sometimes had to pick him up after matches and training. Believe me parents need a break like that even when they’re not working” Maeve replied with a smile. “Do you want tea or coffee?” she offered. You did this when you had guests. “She certainly is that way. She already seems to be smart as well”. Looking to Ella she added “time to go back to your crayons my dear. Show Oliver what you did”. The little girl looked up at her nana and toddled over to the low table she was working at. Oliver Dougard

"It is a lot but I mean worth it or so people keep saying. I am more of the watch everyone else raise kids and hope the best for them." Maybe it was something about time and he was aware that he had a hard time sorting his out now so to think about a child fitting into that he was never going to be ready for that but his life felt complete so he had no complaints. "I'll take a coffee if it's not too much trouble." Ella did seem comfortable in her home as everyone should. "Will you be here long or is it a day by day situation?" Maeve Lightfeather

By now Maeve knew her way round this kitchen so got down the French press and the ground coffee to make up a mugs worth for Oliver. “It’s no trouble and I’ll be here for a fortnight. After that I’ll be over at Christmas” she replied. So once she added the hot water she put the press on a tray along with a mug, milk jug, spoon and sugar bowl. She did things right as she left this on the low table which was shared with Ella’s crayons and colouring books. So Ella did what her nana suggested showing Oliver her crayon work. Texting David to tell him Oliver called over as well completed these tasks. “She’ll figure out that you need to colour in between the lines but that will come later on”. Oliver Dougard

"Hopefully it's a good two weeks I am sure David has plenty for you guys to do as a family." Kids seemed to help that too. He looked down at Ella and she did have pretty good work for her age. He nodded. "Yeah it will come together but seeing them color outside the lines is nice sometimes to me. It shows in a strange way that they will not let boundaries stop them which might be good in some cases." Maeve Lightfeather

Sipping her tea now she has the chance Maeve replied “David did tell me about his boat. I’m sure we’ll be taking a trip on that. There’s certainly plenty to do here”. Working outside the given lines did lead to discoveries but Ella’s experiments in knowledge would happen later on. “Ella might just do that but she’s got a lot of time to figure things out” she added. Kids did seem to have it easier or being able to go without so much worry anyhow but he still thought it was okay to know what was going on and enjoy time. "Maybe it's a part of him liking adventure at least with his own boat he can come and go out on the seas as his work and life allow him too. Have you planned much while you are in town?" Ella got back to her work once grandma found her a page to finish colouring in. Little hands could so much as Maeve replied "I never figured he'd get a boat given we lived nowhere near the sea. It might have started in his university days. There's plenty planned for this week, not so much for next week yet but today was going to the sea front with Ella. Something simple to get used to here". As long as she stayed in the UK she wouldn't get to see her grandchild that often. Something she'd need to figure out given how important family was to the Lightfeather clan. Oliver Dougard
