Hayden was more like his mother than his father as in he liked being in one place and knowing about all the ins and outs. It was like that with people too but as long as he stayed busy with them then his urges to kidnap them and spend time with them remained in check which was good. None the less today, a bit on the afternoon side he was meeting Xanthe and doing some adventuring. Keep calm, remain supplied and he thought everything else would fall into place. Besides Xanthe and him had one thing in common, they were both new and that thing in common was keeping Xanthe from being a victim which was good. Xanthe Wingard

Xanthe was more used to small towns and farm country in her usual explorations but a jungle and rainforest was new one for her. The same principles applied; dress for the weather and the possibilities and since it wasn't too cold she just really needed to pack a raincoat and a microfleece for later. So she kept those in her backpack and had brought proper pants and boots with her along with a red t-shirt. She also handed Hayden a present; a matching little walkie talkie to hers and a flash light before they started. Then they could keep in touch if they got separated. "These might be helpful for later on" she suggested helpfully. She even had a boonie hat she'd brought with her which rested on her head. So she knew what she was doing and looked cheerful doing it. She was going to make the most of this week on a tropical island. Hayden Quinzell

Hayden was well, fine in his interactions because he had learned to speak up though not loudly to others and listen some would say even better but were those things that would help him now? He had no idea for today he simply knew it was about fun and adventure and one of his favorite past times doing tourist things. "Yeah?" he said as he looked the walkie talkie over. "If we get pulled apart for a longer time than either of us is comfortable yes," he said. "Your hat is cute," he said as he laughed. "Fits the mood," he added as he looked around. The last thing that he wanted was for them to get lost. "I think if we start out north we should be fine." He was playing it by ear but it should be good. Xanthe Wingard

“We can use it for that purpose but you can also send out an SOS on these. A map is on my phone and so is the compass app. I’ve done this often enough to know to be prepared” Xanthe replied. So turning her phone on briefly she located north and then switched to her digitsl map for a look at it. She could keep the main paths in her head so could work without seeing it for a while. “The hat helps with the sun and rain. North sounds good to me but the map could have been better. I wonder if the side trails are properly marked” she added. Too much information spoiled exploration but you needed some before you set out. Hayden Quinzell

"Wow you are really smart when it comes to this." Fuck now he really could not kidnap her not that he was but he did think about it from time to time but he knew he needed friends so maybe. "I mean I am mostly prepared as much as one can be but I do need to see how to be better, oh you're here for a week right?" That was enough time for anyone unless they decided to stay. He looked over the map as he thought. "Oh there are off parts, I one hundred percent believe that. A cave or dip into like a cave is something that I could see being a real possibility too." He looked at the map and held it up to the light. "The land might look different but if we walk, we might find something that is off the map. Things are always off the map even if it's just rocks." Looking at Hayden she replied “I’d have liked a better map. What we did as part of XAND needed a lot of preparation as we were facing the unexpected. The location could have unexpected dangers but we were able at least determine some of them like asbestos infested buildings in ghost towns. They’re not just a wild west thing. You also should let it be known when you expect to be back. Then help can be sent if you are overdue. And yes I am here for a week; unless something else brings me back here”. She sounded confident in her abilities but really hadn’t been able to get as much as she figured she needed. The outdoor shop wouldn’t sell her a large knife which was at least an option if you couldn’t get a pistol. “There was four of us and we’d met in college. Our initials made up the company name. Then as the way things work in a depression not even the radio adverts could keep things afloat. Which explains why I’m unemployed. There usually is plenty that’s not marked on a map but the trail should get more interesting if we branch of here.” Xanthe indicated a branch going east about 500 yards away according to the scale as this was a marked path. A cartographer wouldn’t have noted it unless it had some merit. Even different rocks were worth looking at. Hayden Quinzell

"Hopefully it will be enough of a good map to get us where we need to be," he said. Who would want to come back here though he did not know. He figured a week would be enough unless you started to plant roots then that could keep you here. Her friends they seemed close maybe that was hard for her to talk about but yet here she was killing it in conversation. "Being unemployed does suck BUT," well he hoped she found better ways to keep herself occupied than he did. "Well it will look up I hope. He looked down at the map and nodded. "Yeah should be fine it's not like coyotes or wolves exist here I don't think so no worries on that front." Xanthe Wingard

There wasn't much holding Xanthe in her home state right now and a lack of currency would be a problem later on when she got back. Therefore she needed a job and fast. Getting back here would need to wait for another vacation trip but she'd do all she could with this week of time. She nodded when she heard Hayden speak and replied "So I just need to worry about dodgy footing? There might be a cave system hidden by the jungle itself". She sounded thoughful and led the way. She also said "if we both keep an eye out for branching paths we might find something that's not on the map". She considered that very likely which was why she'd brought the equipment she had. She still wanted to conserve phone power even with a charged power bank in her backpack. So it was quick glances to make sure they were still on the known path before they found something else. He was honestly proud of how good he was holding up conversation. He imagined that his parents might be proud though at sometimes even that was hard to tell but he slowly walked. "We can do that," he said. Keep it like a team effort is what he kept telling himself because it was important. "Are you curious about the off paths too, I mean more than the average person would be?" He found joy in that if so. "It's almost a thrill, exploring what is not seen and known." He took in a deep breath and looked. "So far we are doing so good though." Xanthe Wingard

The off paths usually were interesting but to explore those you needed to be prepared. Which they were for somethings as her backpack even had a medical kit in it along with food bars and water. So looking back at Hayden she replied “I am curious what the off paths are like even with planning more complex trips. The fact the off paths are even on the map means somethings are known about them. We can find out a bit more”. So keeping north an off path was kind of pointed out by the rocks at its entrance . She mentally noted where they would need to branch off and the direction needed to return to the main path. Taking a close look at the rocks as she knelt down these felt and looked quite smooth. "Might be hidden things but could just be I think it would be land erosion over time? Either way it is very interesting to think about. I do not, well I have not met anyone who could help with it but if we find something important we could perhaps always turn it into the college." Xanthe Wingard

“We can certainly tell what we do find something” Xanthe confirmed. “A smooth stone would have spent a long long time in water but it could have been carried here or been part of a long dried up body of water. Land erosion is also a possibility as well”. Nothing had been confirmed or ruled out yet so they needed to keep on looking. “let’s see where the path leads” she suggested and the walk continued. She was careful with her footing as the path was getting rougher but so far so good. Hayden Quinzell

He nodded. If you would ask him what this kind of excitement felt like in his old time he could not tell you but if you asked him now he had various words to describe it. "Time is weird, it goes on even when we are no longer here or there," he missed his old home sometimes but overall his life was so much better here. He looked as they walked. "If it leads to nothing I will bee sad," he said as he laughed. Xanthe Wingard

As organised as this landscape was it wasn't untamed. So Xanthe stopped briefly to get her flashlight out of the backpack and get it ready. There was plenty of light above them but not much was filtering down to ground level. So they were partially in the dark and a flashlight would also keep them in touch of each other. "Sometimes you don't find anything out of the ordinary when you explore. You usually find what you expect to find but sometimes you can be surprised" she replied. She knelt down to examine some loose ground and there wasn't much topsoil here. It just rubbed off to one side as she took a closer look. Hayden Quinzell

"That is true." This was calming to him still and that made him think that maybe he should do it more. His life was crazy with it but it did not mean that he took these small things for granted no he loved them. As they walked the sounds of nature were becoming more and more evident and he did enjoy taking in the fresher air that seemed to be in these parts. He took a small turn, coming upon parts of debris but nothing too harmful when he heard a small whimpering sound and stopped. "Did you hear that?" Xanthe Wingard
