The lack of light made it hard to see anything. It was more like a deep gloom rather than darkness but she shone her torch anyway to light up the direction from where the sound came from. She still couldn't see a form that would have made such a noise. Could it be a baby animal? Popping the backpack back on she looked back at Hayden. There was still a nagging idea it wasn't what she thought it was. "I need to get closer to find out more" she quietly said sounding sure of herself. Then more movement was heard; fast movement that was heading deeper into the jungle. "Stay close but if we get separated we still have the radios" she suggested. She could reach it easily enough if the radio was needed. So following the direction the sound travelled from she moved as fast as she could in the tough terrain. Yet what they'd heard didn't seem to have that problem. Hopefully they'd see something soon. Hayden Quinzell

Darkness was a little scary to him though one would never know it simply by looking at him but he knew that even in dark or light one had to be careful. He let his eyes watch the flow of Xanthe's torch as he looked around. Closer? Oh, why. "Not by yourself it could be dangerous," he said as he remained calm and followed her. Jungle trenching was not a skill of his though but he would do his best to stay close all while giving space. The jungle started getting deeper and thicker as well. "This jungle is insane," he said quietly as he leaned down and touched the ground with his hands. It hurt a little bit as he quickly got back to his feet but his hands did have a slight green hue to them now and then it disappeared. "Sounds like it's coming a little more from the left side now." Whatever or whoever had whimpered just earlier was making noise that Hayden could track. He did sound concerned for her as he also sounded like he had some idea of the source of the sound. So stopping to check the paths opening up she took the left but she had some idea of the danger the unknown brought. It was as she entered a little clearing she felt as if she’d ran into a brick wall. Or more precisely like being punched as she just glimpsed a child and the big fist being swung at her. It was only partly visible and was followed up by another glancing hit from her other force arm. This girl was frightened more than anything and while Xanthe was disoriented that left Hayden to deal with her. She looked ragged and dirty and he would see her den made out of a hole in the ground and her bag she was protecting. Then she made another whimper as she looked at him. Hayden Quinzell(She looks a bit like Newt from Aliens and she can project another pair of arms using her mind. These manifest as an ability to reach out up to twenty feet from where she is and affect anything)

This path was filled with a lot but what he did not expect was what he had seen. Ragged, scraggly hair but all alive none the less. Yeah not anything he was used to seeing in his timeline but that was the beauty of other worlds in their own way. He turned back to Xanthe. "We need to proceed with extreme caution since we are not only strangers but she might not take to kind to us in the first place considering we have no idea how long she has been here." The feral looking girl with an oddity ability looked back at both of them now she was cornered for now. So as Xanthe shook of her confusion she had an idea. She would have to be careful as she had heard of other urban legends and actual historical cases like this girl. Feral children weren't a new thing but something nagged at Xanthe as this girl didn't seem that far gone. So opening her backpack she took out a bottle of water and a snickers bar and placed them in front of her. One of the extra arms grabbed these as she regarded the people in front of her curiously. Normally she took from people hiking here but she was being offered these. Chewing on the chocolate bar she wasn't running now. "Lets see what she does next" Xanthe quietly said to Hayden. He had to give Xanthe credit she could be useful which was good in a situation like this. He also did not blame the little girl at all for taking to chocolate because he knew he got ill if he missed his sweets. She still seemed cautious rightfully so. "Do you think she speaks?" he asked. "I mean I know she has the ability to speak but do you think she speaks." Xanthe Wingard

Hunger was what made this little girl follow Xanthe and Hayden in the first place and she took the initiative by picking up the backpack and looking for more food. Then picked up another snickers bar for later. These people didn’t look afraid of her and what her father told her came to mind. That there would be people who were good and would care for an oddity even if the people where she came from didn’t. This was a journey that had started in Georgia and led to Miami where she stowed away on that ship; all with OSE and the police after her. She looked calmer now but still cautious as you’d expect. So Xanthe replied “I think she can but she’ll need to trust somebody to do so. It might be beyond us but she does need help. Remember the Jungle Book? That was based on a real historical case and there have been many others”. So looking to the ragged girl she softly said “we are not going to hurt you. Eat your fill and you’ll get help”. They would still have to be delicate about this but she might come round to them sooner rather than later. Hayden Quinzell

He slightly turned to the girl but kept his distance. This was new but not a place that he had not been. Thrown out? Left abandoned so many reasons why she could have gotten here but he did not know but she seemed together, not so forceful at least yet. "The jungle book?" Fudge how much was he behind on. "Wait the one with the bear and the boy and the tiger, yes yes it coming back to me now." Wonderful colors in a dangerous world. "Oh yes Mowgli I do believe," at least the way that he remembered it. "Bare necessities are even a little more now, this poor person," he said as he took a seat. "We might be here a few minutes," he said as he thought they might as well get comfortable. "So is that what you would do to survive if this were you, make sure you had bare necessities?" He went quiet and then spoke. "I find survival, the need for it kind of triggering but needed at times." Xanthe Wingard

“Yes the one with the big bear, the boy and the tiger. When I was a girl I loved that film. And there was a happy ending for the boy. Just as there hopefully will one for this girl” Xanthe replied her look soft as she focused on her. “I would normally have had more equipment than I have now on one of our exploration trips but you always need the bare necessities. Starting with food and water”. The girl watched and listened as she edged a bit closer to them. Now after the second bar of chocolate she finally started to drink the water. She didn’t feel frightened of them anymore. “Do you see what she did to survive?” Xanthe added to she pointed out the gear the girl had in sight in her jungle den. A shovel was how she’d dug the hole and that was lined with the remains of a one man tent minus the poles. Another tent section covered this and there a coat inside it. “She knew what she was doing. Somebody taught her this and she kept it tidy. I would probally have done something similar”. Hayden Quinzell

Every situation was different but how a person handled it that was what Hayden thought made their character. Sometimes it was not all good but watching just a small part of this had him thinking about what someone must do in order to survive. "It is amazing honestly especially considering age and the just adept ability to want to survive." He thought if he thought any deeper than that about it, that it might also be scary but he was not going to ruin anyone's moment. Everyone needed their moments of praise even if sometimes it did not seem like it. "She seems so much smarter than I remember being at that age." Xanthe Wingard

Xanthe did notice something new as the girl got closer. The way she was hanging onto that little bag was a big clue but she left her to the bottle of water for now. “I know first aid but she looks fairly healthy. Just slightly undernourished but time being looked after here will get her back to health. I do worry about other things she’s been through to get here” Xanthe quietly replied. An island like this was a melting pot and who knew where she’d been before that. “She is smart. She’s also an oddity and she knew to come here” she added. Now looking to the girl she had a question. “Darling, can you tell me your name and how you got here?”. Xanthe sounded paternal and caring. Even knowing her name would help build trust that would get her more help later on. A quiet voice followed and they could hear it was Kimberly. The first thing she’d said to them. Hayden Quinzell

He remained calm which was something he had gotten better at doing over time. He liked to look over situations as best he could and decide his movements from there. "Survival and smarts, those make for a great combination if a person no matter the age happens upon a situation as she has." He was amazed which was surprising for him. "Should we call the authorities? She will need somewhere to go from here on out yes?" He wanted to handle this carefully and legally. Xanthe Wingard

Xanthe agreed with what Hayden had to say about Kimberly. She did say “we should tell the authorities about her. I don’t know what level of social services this isle has but they would be the ones you’d expect to help Kimberly”. There was another opinion that needed stated and that was the girl facing them. So it was the obvious thing to ask. So Xanthe did just that. “Do you want us to tell them about you?” The girl did look thoughtful and spoke like her words were rationed. Perhaps she might say more later on. “Papa said this was the safe place to go to. You can tell them”. Then she got back to drinking her water while waited for things to unfold. So Xanthe popped her boonie hat onto the girls head. That showed a smile from her. “I think we can make that call. Starting with the local police who can at least get her the help she needs” Xanthe added. Hayden Quinzell

He nodded. He hoped that the noise would not be too alerting to her. "Okay let me see if I can get a little service and I will make the call." He did not know if this would work out good and he hoped that they would not be hailed heroes or anything but he did hope that the little girl would be okay. Xanthe Wingard

So while she waited for Hayden to find a signal on his phone Xanthe watched Kimberly. She looked more trusting now and helping organise her things did seem to settle her more. There wasn’t much that was brought from her original destination but she did recognise a US accent. One of the southern states for sure. So able to look through the girls bag while she kept eating and drinking she was starting to figure out her story. A letter of introduction was located to whoever would find her which gave her name as Kimberly Weir. Written by her father along with directions and help for her to get here. A journey he clearly hadn’t made for some reason but the truth would come out when the girl got help. The letter also included her birth certificate which confirmed her age as ten and a resident of Georgia. Xanthe did think that mean there was other family of hers around but how welcome would an oddity child be back in the USA? A question she wasn’t sure off an answer too right now but who the next president was would determine future policy. “It’s going to be alright” she softly said as she handed her the now packed bag and her padded coat. If they couldn’t get a signal she did know the way back to the main path and from there where they entered this jungle. Hayden Quinzell
