"No need to be sorry Mallory" Alice replied with a smile. Then she considered the question that was posed. "Similar things apply when you deal with people in general. There's always something going on that's not seen nor obvious.

I recently cleared up an international arrest warrant case with OSE help. One major criminal, his four henchmen and a bunch of military contractors all arrested. The unexpected part was the mercenaries. Guys from Eastern Europe to be exact" she added. She did wonder if after those guys got checked over for crimes they could be held liable for that if they could be employed here.

"I haven't been that far though Guadeloupe is counted as part of France proper. So while they're neighbours they use the Euro, have French laws and have a way of life that's different from us but still relaxed. I'm expecting to have to go there more often on cases but never been to Eastern Europe. Those mercenaries were Russian and I don't really think they want to go back there right now given their nation is fighting a war" Alice replied.

If she was in their boots she'd want to be as far away from the Ukraine as possible. At least in this region of the world you had more good things to look forward to.

Looking back at Mallory she replied "we have a lot of small things to be thankful for on this island. Most of my job is taking action so we still have those to enjoy. The good days do outweigh the bad".

That was true. Crime still happened but they still didn't have the levels of a major US city; perhaps a small one though and the PD was kept busy. She couldn't say that she wouldn't have to defend the island some day. She'd already had to do it once during the mobots raid.

Alice had a feeling she would burn bright and die before her time; she'd a boyfriend, the chance of babies and then that very risky job she did . She just hoped she'd get long enough to do all she wanted to.

"I think the world will leave us alone eventually. It's expensive to maintain a military even in peacetime so if economic stability continued they wouldn't have much choice. We're showing them already we can contribute to the region so why not let us be a nation officially. We're doing it already even if others don't want to admit it." she added as they kept moving through the mall.

"I've never met Avery in person. It is clear she is a force behind the nation movement. I've even been involved in regional level law enforcement and dealing with international arrest warrants here. If that isn't national police work I don't what it is" she replied shrugging her shoulders. "Therefore that makes us a nation".

The idea of good nations wasn't clear cut for Alice. It was easy to see examples of bad nations which got propped up by other nations as they were buffers between world powers. Even the great thinkers of the past had rarely been believers in democracy the way she would see it. So the Ashford's being an effective family in charge of a republic made sense to her.

"We're no North Korea. That's a fact. I don't see our situation as a dictatorship either but we still have to be that haven our our kind and humans who want to be here. A 'good' nation can still be doing some dark things but democracy isn't everything" she added.

Nations were complicated things. Even the form of government tended to be that way. "It's important to have this island so we can get to know ourselves and others round us. Then we can get to know the weird as well" Alice replied. It was hard to believe she'd faced pure hatred and nearly died here not so long ago. Danger was a police officers lot but there wasn't as many bad days as you might think.

"What I find weird about this island more than anything is that we have dinosaur bones and that period of time well documented. Yet there is barely anything known about the period before the old town was built except for finding a sunken pirate ship. That's not normal" she suggested.
