"That is amazing and you know I thought about going their but I figure I will let the rush past first," she said as she shook her head no. "I have not yet, sadly to say I too have not gotten out much but I do need to change it and I figure what better time than the present or at least a time where I do not have to do it by myself." Betty was good company and he figured she would continue to be that way. So hearing what she had to say he had a suggestion. “How about I organise a take out lunch in the cafeteria and we can go for a drive later on? I would like to enjoy some of the summer too as life isn’t all about work. Let me know what you want and I’ll get it for you.” Betty Carter

She supposed that honestly it would not hurt her to get out. "Sure," she said quietly. "I think that would sound good." What did she want from the cafeteria. "I just need whatever the daily special is, not too picky on what I will not eat but I do look forward to the company and the drive." Largo Vasquez

Largo smiled and a meeting up time at the cafeteria was arranged for later on. So when that did come round he got some fried chicken boxed up with a portion of vegetable rice. As well as filling up his small thermos flask with coffee then getting two paper cups for later on. Then it was Betty’s turn to pick the special. Then they were on their way driving east out of the university in his jeep. They needed to get out of the new city and old town before they could get to the coast road. Then they could decide on staying where the sea was or heading slightly inland. Betty Carter

She waited until her food was plated up and then made her way over to Largo, once upon getting in the jeep she felt good just getting out and letting everything go from the days before. "I can drive back when it's time to return if you want," she offered as they were still driving. Largo Vasquez

With the marina on the left side of the city you could just see its edge as you left the university. Then keeping going eastbound you’d hit the coast road soon enough. Before long the traffic had cleared and it was just them and a few vehicles heading that way. Even the slum town was behind them now as seabirds flew overhead in the blue sky. “If you want you can” Largo agreed with a smile. With so many little beaches and coves you were spoilt for choice but he stopped at a small sheltered cove. He even had folding stools from a previous expedition still under the folding back seat. “There’s still a lighthouse out there left from the 1800’s. Now automated” he pointed it out along with the rocks it rested on out at sea. Now they just needed to pick a spot to have lunch as Betty got a tour as they went. Betty Carter

Luckily she was not a monster behind the wheel, ways of getting around were far too tricky and expensive. "Alright then," she said. He seemed easy enough to get along with and thoughtful. Her eyes turned as he mentioned an automated lighthouse. Honestly the technology here still surprised her. "I need to remember that so that I can come back out one day," she said as she looked over the views. "How about we eat right there, it's a bit away from the lighthouse but not too crowded with land animals that could steal our food." Largo Vasquez

Largo chuckled a little as the lunch spot was picked out. It was the seagulls you had to worry about. “The crabs might try and steal your lunch but the seagulls will certainly try” he warned. He found Betty easy to get on with too and he got the folding stools for them along with his food and the flask of coffee. So now they could start with the sound of the sea and a spectacular blue sky as the backdrop. He gave Betty her stool first and then waited till she had picked a spot before joining her. The chicken and rice was cold by now but that didn’t bother him. He liked it better that way. “Those lighthouses used to have crews. When this place was still called Paradise Island. Research is continuing to uncover more of its history but it does go back further than the golden age of piracy” he mused. Betty Carter

She picked a spot where they could see the water but not be too close because she enjoyed taking in the view and plus her company was nice and she did like that. "Wow, see I never knew that. Every time that you think that you know something about history it seems there is more to uncover, is that why you like it so much?" Largo Vasquez

So as they dined near the water Largo was not only enjoying the good coastal weather but his company. Then Betty posed a question. “That is why. It’s not usually something specific like an individual artefact but building the whole picture of what was going on. Records however from here are fragmentary so hopefully some of the gaps can be filled in from our neighbours. It also raises questions. It’s odd that this island has never been part of an empire though the original European peoples here were Spanish. Then other people added into the melting pot during the piracy era. That is something that needs looked at as well as how far back history can be pushed” he replied. There were indeed a lot of questions and these could keep him busy until he retired. Betty Carter

Betty had to admit that she was enjoying this but she knew it was because at this moment it was because it was all new but Largo did seem so wise so the company was good too which was something that she had figured a lot of people often looked over though they should not. "Is there no evidence of it in the record books?" She thought that it had to come from something but she understood it not being able to at the same time. "You pose that it might have a deeper history than the books, I think that is a true possibility." Largo Vasquez

Fried chicken was a messy lunch but also fun. Betty was posing questions and those kept pushing on the search for truth. You needed to understand the past to have a chance of a future. “The ancestors of the people here didn’t leave much in the way of records. In fact the oldest standing buildings in general are those in the slums which would be round a century or slightly older. It’s a puzzle alright” he replied knowing it didn’t add up compared to the rest of the region. He’d expect to see grand houses dotted round the island and even large stone structures were rare. Both were fairly absent. Betty Carter

She took a second and nodded. "Okay I must admit that I have never been the best at puzzles but I think it might be different when learning about something like this. I guess it might be the fact that it could be the curiousity that would keep someone going but either way, maybe one day we will know more." He seemed nice and she did think that more people did need to be nicer though she knew that you could not control others. "So do you bring all women out here? I just have to ask." Largo Vasquez

Largo looked back at Betty and shrugged his shoulders. "I honestly think the last time this much knowledge was lost in one part of the world was when the great library of Alexandria gradually fell and then finally caught fire. In this case it does feel planned rather than being gradual. Not even the old timers round here can't tell my team anything prior to the time from when the slums were built. That would have been the first phase of the old town" he suggested. Then came her question. And a curious one it was but she was wise to ask it. He could have been a serial killer for all she knew. "You are actually the first Betty" he replied. Betty Carter

She listened and nodded. "I hate fire," she said. "You ever notice in history how it always seems to engulf the most important parts of who we are and our history so as a lesson I have always tried to keep myself personally away from it though a part of me realistically knows that we can not avoid it all together." She wondered if that meant that the team had to dig deeper though she doubt that anyone would give clearance for that. "Oh," she said a little surprised. What if he was a nut job, it would not be the first esepcially according to history. "Well thanks, see now I have to hold it as a memory forever. How unexpected but much appreciated." Largo Vasquez
