Sophie knew school was essential as her dad had kept saying. Had being the operative word as Aunt Lucy wasn't even her real aunt and he had joined his ancestors in the afterlife. She knew her mother was out there some where and given the stories she'd heard about her she was bound to be having a lot more fun as they waited for the last bell to ring. At least she'd Physical Education as her last class of the day and she did enjoy the obstacle course and climbing up ropes. So after the bell she got showered and changed out of her PE gear. This meant two bags to bring back today but after a month of this new school she was getting used to that. So she was waiting for Jack at the front gate and ready for fun via dropping her bags of at home. She might well have lived in the west side of the slum town but her clothes were clean and so was she. She'd had to fight her corner since she'd arrived and Jack was one of her few friends on the island. Being short was one thing but people assumed too much just because of her address. That made her quite angry but Jack was different. So given she knew and used insults in Cantonese, Spanish and English she wasn't any ordinary girl; even in this refuge for oddity kind. Jack P. J.

Jack did not hate school but he also was not going to spend all of his time there. He wanted to learn the basics and maybe even eventually get a college degree but still he was a young kid and was easily swayed as well. Still in knowing all of that he took a second to think about friends. He'd only made like two friends but that was all he needed as he spotted Sophie. She was good people in the end as he did not understand why people could sometimes point out how short she was. They were all growing in the end. "Sophie," he said as he finally made his way over to the front gate. It was one step closer to freedom being done for the day and he did like that. "Ready to get out of here?" Sophie Chang

Sophie heard Jack and had a smile on her face when she turned round. So after one last look to see there was no teacher after her today she decided she was free for the day. Therefore could show Jack a thing or two; but where to go? The mall was kind of the hangout of the children from the gated community, the pier was neutral ground but the slums where her playground where she could do things she couldn't have done in Los Angeles. "So now we are free what do you want to do?" she posed to him. She was open to anything but she'd need to leave her bags of first. Jack P. J.

He still normally kept to himself but he guess if he had to say that he had one friend it would be Sophie. Maybe it was because she was short or because she did not take any shit off of anyone either way he found it amusing. The slums were a dangerous area but he felt if they ran into any trouble they would be able to take care of themselves. "I am going to go to the east side of the slums," he said. "I mean people make such a big deal about the slums but the truth is that I do not get why. So I am going to go exploring and see what hits me." He might literally get hit but he would be okay. If anybody in this school could get Jack through the east side of the slums without too much damage it was probally her. She was agile, was afraid of very little and didn't take shit of anybody. It also helped that she did have a fire based surprise for people who underestimated her. She also lived in the west side and the east side was only slightly more difficult for her to deal with. "You don't think small. We can go together but I'll need to leave my bags of at my aunts apartment first; that's in the west slum and its easier using the roof and fire escape approach. She'd also be annoyed if I went out there in my school clothes" she cheerfully replied. Her aunt Lucy treated her school day clothes as her best ones but it would be easy to have a quick change into a red t-shirt and black denim shorts once she got home. Lucy had been in her life from the very beginning and been the mother figure. So she won't ruin her better clothes having fun in gang territory. So as what they needed to do went round in her head and she made plans that gave them a chance she looked focused. "You can leave your bag with mine. Then you won't lose it later" she added having figured all this out in a few seconds. Having two smart parents helped with that. Then they were on their way. Jack P. J.

He took a second. "I mean all I do while I am in school is daydream about ways to get out of it and plus I want to see what it looks like." He was too excited because he had never gotten out much while he was here. As far as parents well Victor was out doing whatever and Lisa, she did love him but even in that they let him and his twin sister do what they wanted and he did like that a lot. "Alright sounds like a plan," he said as he fixed his bag and looked around. It still seemed strange to him that they were pretty much kids on an island free to do whatever. "How is it when you are home? Good?" Sophie Chang

The walk from their school to the west side of slum town wouldn't take long. You could cycle it faster if you could keep your bike from being stolen but on the whole she was happy with life here. It wasn't too different from the heat of LA and it was just as much of a mixing pot. Like Jack she also had a lot of freedom but given the lessons her father had taught her she knew not to push her luck too much. So as Jack followed her home and approaching the end of the town suburbs and the start of the slum she replied "Today you'll get your chance. And see more if you head home with me on other occasions. The west side isn't too bad. The market has most things you'd need and you still have to be careful. It's fun and exciting too. Sometimes I even see night workers as the place comes alive after dark. My aunt had been there for as long as I remember. I can barely remember my mother so she was mother and still is. My dad passed on just before my power showed and auntie Lucy made the move here so I could learn how to use it properly". She missed her dad badly but was getting used to him not being there. He knew the danger in his job and her birth mother did the same. Right now Sophie had to find her own way and future. Then before you'd even know it there was her apartment block; it certainly wasn't fancy but it did get the job done even with being ugly concrete and sharp cornered. She lived in the middle of this so that meant five flights of stairs and you needed to check the corners on occasion. Jack P. J.

The truth was that Jack was still doing his best to make sure that for the most part he fit in but he knew that his slip ups had been too much at the moment and yet worse than that was him finding out that he did not care to fix them. It was not an issue of him having too much pride either the truth did just allude him still as he listened to Sophie. "Yeah I want to learn how to make proper use about my powers too and it is a good thing when you are able to do it but it is good that your aunt has been there too." He needed to work on that with his own parents. "That's a lot of stairs but I'm up for the challenge." Sophie Chang

Sophie smiled and led the way up the flights of stairs checking briefly as they entered a stairwell. Even at this time of day people were around and out in corridors but there was no danger as they finally reached her apartment. She used her key to let them in and listened for her aunt. Who didn't seem to be around right now; Sophie found the answer on the fridge door as the notes explained she was working an earlier shift and to sort her own dinner out once she did her homework. So leaving their bags in the hallway she said "I'll be right back. Make yourself comfortable" before she slipped into her bedroom. There was pictures of her and her aunt, along with them with her dad but none of her birth mother on the walls. She emerged a few minutes later in a different outfit that was more suitable for exploring; this being a red t-shirt, denim shorts and trainers. She's also a little backpack on that could hold snacks, a knife and rocks; things she'd found useful already living here. "I'm ready" she cheerfully explained. The adventure could soon begin. Jack P. Jack nodded once she told him to get comfortable. That was hard for him to do in places that he was not acquanited with but he was going to do his best. It was not like anythng he had ever seen but he also knew that everyone was different. He was releived when she came back though. "Alright let's get going, I figure if we can stay out for a couple of hourse then ti will be fine." Sophie Chang

Sophie had made sure of her extra equipment while she'd gotten changed and added a flash light for good measure. As they left the mismatched apartment behind the route down the stairs was repeated. When they got outside again she was able to start by pointing something out. "You can use that taller building like a compass point. That shows you where north is if you get lost" she advised. It was a taller blocky building that might have been a hotel or office block at some point but had better days just like the rest of the slums. Then she started to hand out supplies; starting with a flash light that she gave to Jack to look after. As well as a throwing rock that would rest comfortable in his palm. So shouldering the backpack she pointed out the street they'd need to travel down to go east. You had a few shops here that had taken over existing retail premises but no danger yet. Just people trying to get by. Then she advised with a little smile "we'll be using the fire escapes soon. You'll get plenty of practice with stairs today". Just being here was the warm up. The real adventure was going to begin once they had to roof hop. Jack P. J.

He listened and nodded as he remembed it. It was always good to know where you were and be decent with directions on the off chance that you did get lost. He took the flash light and looked it over. It was decent and might come in handy later down the road. "Climbing up a fire escape?" he asked. "That will be good. "As far as the stairs I should be good and this part of the town seems a bit safer than most though it does not take much to make that happen anywhere." Sophie Chang

"Fire escapes are good ways of getting around here; especially as a lot of the buildings are only an alley width away from each other. You can either jump from roof to roof or climb to the next fire escape" Sophie cheerfully said as the alley she was leading them to would have been one you'd avoid once it got dark. It had the usual dumped rubbish, a large rat or two trying to hide and if you'd came here in the dark you'd never have seen that it was a blind alley along with a lurking gang member or a few of them. At this point in time it was just them and nervous vermin that she was ignoring. So as she led the way to the fire escape she needed to go into tip toes to pull down she added "it dosen't take much to change for the slums to be dangerous but the torch might help later on. So will the rock as you can throw it at somebody or use it to make noise at one location while you're at another". Good advice all round as she climbed up the starting ladder with ease. Once up this they'd be able to get to the roof rather quickly and get a birds eye view of the area. "You'll be able to figure out where you want to go from here shortly. You can see all the area from here" she mused as she moved quietly but not slowed down by having to be stealthy. Jack P. J.

Perhaps it was the element of danger but Jack honestly found the slums interesting. It might also be his youthfulness but he watched as Sophie had to get on her tip toes to get the fire escape down and he shook his head but in the end it was a job done and that was all that mattered. Ladders though, ugh. It would be okay he just needed to climb and not look down. He did not know if his fear of heights was irrational or if the thoughts of smashing his face just got to him easily but he did start to climb up after Sophie not looking down. "What are you saying Sophie that we need to mark out an escape route?" Hell yes he was down for that even if it were not a needed thing. He was starting to feel like a vigilante in a way. The idea of a vigilante had never truly gone away even when the comics and superhero movies changed after 1993. Neither did the idea of costumed villians so in little way Jack and Sophie were keeping this alive. Sophie only needed to climb up 20 feet to get to the stair well proper and then they just had to keep on going and not look down. "It does help to know where you can get back to safety along with knowing where you want to go. It's good to keep in your head the points you can cross buildings and the more you do this you'll build up a map in your head. Not all action round here happens at street level" she advised and before long they reached a slightly angled roof that was flat enough to walk on safely. On the way up it might have been observed that life was still going on behind the windows they passed. She actually paused at one stage to cheerfully wave at a woman in the window and the wave was returned. One of the night workers she knew. "So now you can see a lot more where do you want to go from here?" she asked. The entire slum town was laid out in front of him like a giant map; a direction just needed to be picked. Jack P. J.
