You might wonder why a running track were you just went round and round would be the best place for a run. Well for starters it's winter with snow and ice everywhere and they could get a got hot shower afterwards in the changing areas. The track was also kept clear of said ice and snow. This facility also had tennis courts and a little coffee shop they could visit afterwards. It wasn't just a running track with other sports also offered.
So Alice had texted Emmett with the meeting up time earlier when she was at work. A time had been agreed via bouncing messages back and forward and now Alice was outside doing her stretches. Her running gear was pink with a warmer looking pair of shorts that wasn't so tight. Only her lover got to see her butt like that. What marked Alice out even on this paradise was her wings. Certainly useful but she couldn't blend in anywhere.
When Emmett arrived they'd figure out how far and long they needed to run this evening. With it getting dark early the floodlights were already on.

he actually hadn't on planned on running today. if he could he would go for one in the morning to help him wake up and start the day, but today so happened to be his day off. so sleeping in was a must.
he went on about his day and chuckled at himself when he received a text from alice. he hadn't planned on running, but it was fine. alice just motivated him to get up and go.
he was ready for their run at the agreed time. he actually needed this even if it wasn't a morning run. a run was still good."how many laps are you planning to do this time or are you going for speed?"emmett asked her as he started to stretch a bit before his run.

Alice tended to run after work as this suited her better but everybody was different. As it turned out they were both on time and Emmett was happy to leave the distance to her. She mulled it over and didn't need long to get back to him.
"I'm thinking endurance this session. Four thousand metres so there will be a sprint finish on the last lap" she replied cheerfully. She'd probally do this or more on a run when it wasn't the middle of winter and she was clearly looking forward to spring. When they had both stretched she'd start the watch up and see what time they made together. Two people were a better way of doing it. On your own it much harder.

he chuckled softly at her response."i see you came prepared, game plan and all."he stretched his arms out and started heading towards the track to get ready for this run. he liked running with alice, even if she didn't know she challenged him to do better which he didn't mind at all. see how far one could go just made them want to try even harder at least he thought so."ready whenever you are."

Alice nodded and replied "you need both and certainly endurance especially when flying". A musing on her part as they gave him the stop watch to look after. She'd count of the ten laps and having to run the watch as well was distracting. Now they moved to the starting line and she softly added "off we go". She took that as their starting gun and settled for a pace that was more than a jog but only slightly faster. They'd need to speed up slightly more later on to make a good time but there was ten laps to achieve this.
Then they were on lap 2 proper before you'd know it. She called it and so the run continued.

"yeah, that makes sense."he said before chuckling."i'll take your word for it."referring to the flying part. thought it made a lot of sense. she would assume she would have to maintain a level of concentration and he was positive if it was windy or something that was something else alice would have to take in account.
alice handed him the stop watch and he waited till they were ready to start it. he got into position and when alice spoke they were off. he would look at the time when she would ask and it seemed like they were doing well so far.

Endurance was a good thing for everybody as life wasn't always about a quick sprint. Wind did effect her but you could always fly into the wind and change direction after you ascended. Emmett's power did seem more useful to have but she'd be the air support in a fight.
Alice kept upping the pace through laps three and four before she called back "when we hit lap seven we speed up". Which wouldn't be too long given the running they were doing already. From time to time the lead changed as they kept each other going. She encouraged him and vice versa.

as he ran he made sure to control his breathing. it was something that he had been working on. again this wasn't about speed, but about how long they could keep going. alice was pretty much training him. he made sure to keep a moderate pace as they rounded the tracks."roger that."emmett said with a chuckle as he turned to focus on the track once more.
it was easy to lose yourself in thought, which is what emmett like about running. running did help him clear his mind, even when he decided to run with music.

"lap 7" she cheerfully called out and her legs found another running gear. It clicked in smoothly. She found just doing something as simple as physical training or running did help her state of mind. It also gave her energy back in return.
She stretched into the lead as the wind up towards the sprint commenced. Normally it was left to the last lap but in a normnal race it might happen earlier. Could Emmett keep up?

"is it over yet?"he managed to say before laughing. he took a breath in and slowly released it as he continued along. he had check the time when she had called out the lap and they were doing pretty good. well more her than him, but he really wasn't that too far behind her. they neared the end of their last lap and once she crossed the finish line emmett stopped the stopwatch."that was a good. here."he said throwing the watch for her to catch.

The aim of this game wasn't to win but to put in a good time together. So adding in the few seconds he was behind her the time was still pretty good. She caught the watch and checked it. She was panting too and the 4k had just flown by. This would be a good time to stop and take a drink and she'd brought a spare one as usual.
"It's not a professional level time but still pretty good Emmett" she finally was able to say then went to her sports bag to look for the drinks. Offering him one as he opened the other one. "I needed that as well". Her day had been mainly office bound and activity like that got her brain buzzing again.

Alice listened to what Emmett had to say as she took a long from her own bottle. She had recovered fairly quickly but raised an eyebrow all the same. A sports career simply wasn't an option as things stood.
"I don't think going pro will ever be an option given how the world views our kind. For starters I'd be accused of cheating just for having wings" she replied while frowning. She had a feeling she'd also be caged again once the left the island. These rather dark thoughts were usually at the back of her mind but the training would help her defend her kind in the here and now.
"Anyway I'm stateless. I never had US citizenship though I grew up there. I'd be caged again if I left here". She had every reason to have turned out like a monster but hadn't. There had been enough love in her life to prevent that happening.
She had love in her life right now with Adam and that enough to keep her going even through dark times.
So this rather dark revelation might well ruin the good mood that had built up during the run. "All we can do is try the best we can" she said sounding more encouraging. She just hoped he'd had better luck in life.

her comment made him think that people's situations before the island were very different. he didn't have the same thoughts as she did. obviously they had both lead very different lives before coming to the island. it made him sad to think that was the first thing she thought of. he had meant to encourage her with that comment and it seemed to have backfired.
he stayed quiet unsure of what to say and she wasn't wrong. the world didn't seemed like it was ready to to accept them. he offered her a kind smile and nodded."yeah, we gotta keep pushing forward for sure."

Alice hadn't meant to kill the mood like that. She could see his reaction and she thought that she had hurt him given how quiet he went. She looked back at Emmett still looking a little sad but she figured she had to apologise first.
"I'm sorry for what I said. Every oddity has their story to tell prior to coming here and I was out of order" she quietly said also wondering what his tale would be.
She took a deep drink from her bottle and did try to keep the positivity going. "I hope you'd better luck that I had and things have to get better. This is the only chance we have" she mused.
