young but not stupid (Sophie)

So she was going to the university. She did walk there as the city was quite compact and she spied Rocco at the meeting place. She had added a baseball cap to her usual ideas of shorts, t-shirt and trainers and gave him a cheerful wave,

“Did you get done what you needed?” she asked.

"Adults do like their procedures being followed" Sophie replied. She knew that well but she did get away with more in the orphanage that she expected to. "So what do you want to do next?" she cheerfully posed. She supposed his papers could get signed off later and they did have the rest of the day to work with.

"Not sticking around the slums unless you know what you are doing is a good idea" Sophie mused as she adjusted her backpack. It was just as well she'd taken some rocks out of the garden and left them in her backpack. She might well have an oddity power but throwing a rock was still a solid plan B.

She couldn't keep a knife in the orphanage but what she had would hopefully be enough to deal with potential trouble. The slums were quieter recently but how long could that last?

"I went diving in the cove of wonders but caves are a new thing for me" she added as they set off to their first destination.

“I assume you know where to go in the slums. Some parts are more dangerous than others” Sophie suggested and then added “it’s good to visit interesting places. The volcano should be worth a look as well”. She was surprised that a group tour hadn’t happened yet for the orphanage children.

“Even real siblings can’t be sistering all the time. I still have to make time for the support doll project but I am able to delegate some of it now. Like you I do need to get out and do something. Even if that is only tennis or swimming” she said with a smile. Yes, she was busy but even busy people needed to make time for themselves.

Entering the slums was noticeable as while the streets were cleaner these days you could still see how buildings looked different and some looked in worse shape than others. Two people walking together might not attract much attention but Sophie still kept an eye out for trouble.

"We got freak snow last winter but I don't think its as simple as rounding up somebody who has ice powers to freeze over a pond. An indoor venue would be the best idea and you get an ice rink everywhere in the world. Why not on this island?" she posed. "Even among my kind you might not find somebody who was good with ice. My element is fire". An oddity was rare when compared to the numbers of base humans round them.

As Sophie was invited in she gave this matter some thought. You either needed to enclose part of a floor, flood it and then freeze it or purpose build a rink. Machinery did a better job than oddity powers would. Following him in she replied “it was a surprise to see my mother’s element in me. Even humans have abilities and skills they can use if they put their minds to it so it’s no different to me developing what I can do with my flame affinity”.

Now she could see the brothel up close now she was inside. It did look more likely to be much busier once the evening came round but she still took a good look round anyway before she relaxed slightly. “You could find a space to close off and create a rink that way. I don’t know a source for an ice machine but my mother might” she added. She could visualise the kind of building that would work. Perhaps one of the dockside warehouses.

So Rocco’s family might be found here. Or at least one of them who could sign his papers. Either way they weren’t here so it seemed it was time to go. “So where do you want to go next?” Sophie posed. “I doubt night workers can pass an std on without having sex” she added.

She had enough dealings with working girls given where she grew up and also from the west slums to know that. So following Rocco she presumed they were leaving.
