Anything they’d done before this was based on a specific story and even then they knew what they were looking for. The slums were too big too handle without that information. “That sounds good Derek. You might find that specific thing and keep me informed. Hopefully it’s only a few months till I get back here” she replied. She figured it would be no longer than six months until she got enough money together to get back here and anyway a bit of winter sun would be better for her. “I can keep looking too. News does get out of here but you do hear things faster on the ground” she added. “Though I can tell you about an old manor in the east of the island. I got a short look round it but it was severely rat infested and dangerous. I didn’t want to be rat food and I wouldn’t wish it on anybody”. Derek Tenpenny

"Plague infested buildings?" That was indeed gross but he knew it probably meant it was abandoned. "Rats are a rather unique creature. Sometimes they are hungry so they are looking for food but other times I think that they infest up because they have nothing else to do, did you need a shot after that?" Xanthe Wingard

“Nothing bit me but I did have company. I also found a body they were feeding on but the place was long abandoned. In fact Hayden was contemplating buying the place and fixing it up. It’s going to be a huge job if he does decide to do it but it’s a mansion on its own grounds. What’s not to like about living out in the sticks?” she replied. She was surprised they were even still there unless criminals were dumping bodies that far away from the city. Derek Tenpenny

"Ferocious deer," he answered his face being serious. "What if a person runs into a ferocious deer and then they have to turn around and fend for their life, no one would like that." He had never actually met a deer but he also knew you could never know. "Also bugs does this island not have wild bug life?" Xanthe Wingard

Xanthe had driven there so seen the big picture regarding the local wildlife. “There was no forests round the mansion. It’s on a side road off the coast road going east from the city. Certainly abandoned, probally forgotten about and it put me in mind of a house built in the 1920’s but had no electricity in the kitchen. Bugs are everywhere, even here but no angry deer. I’m not even sure there are any on this island” she replied as she adjusted the sail to catch the new wind direction. “You’ll have plenty to explore round here. Almost like the old times we had but it’s better doing things like that with people you can trust and care and worry about you” they’d done all the work on the ground while the others did the research and looked after the finances. She always worried about Derek but perhaps these days there was more going on with them. Derek Tenpenny

"That makes sense," he said. "Well I am looking forward to it and having a new place will always help though sometimes life can be scary it's not enough to keep someone away or it should not be enough to keep people away from doing anything and that is a truth, plus friends help always have." Xanthe chuckled slightly replying “I don’t think we’re the kind of people to completely stop doing the Scooby Doo stuff. Not many can even do that and you could find even more of that here”. You needed to be scared at times and that was part of adventuring like they had done. There was too many close scrapes for her liking but that couldn’t be helped. “I wonder just how many pirates used this island over the centuries?” she posed. If there was one confirmed pirate vessel there would have been more for sure. Derek Tenpenny

"History might give a rough estimate?" he said. "I just mean it might document some but then you would have to almost count all the undocumented, but it might be a decent place to start number wise or do you think it would be a waste of time?" Xanthe Wingard

“So we could start with the mid 1500’s and go as far as the late 1700’s. That’s the main era of high seas piracy but you still had smuggling going on during the age of sail after that” Xanthe mused. She was sure piracy continued in some manner even after that but you had the civil war blockade runners she knew about. So that was the basic time frame to work with. “I doubt many of these visits would be documented so I’d think there was a lot. I’m sure there has been plenty more happening here during that period of time”. So many possible mysteries to discover. Derek Tenpenny

"I don't doubt it," he said. "I mean look at this place now so much going on and there is no way possible that anyone could document it all I do not care what they say or want anyone to believe." He was not a negative person by any means just an honest one. Xanthe Wingard

Looking back at Derek as they sailed on Xanthe replied "I doubt most people never bothered to document what they did here but there would have been some kind of government here; it was an age of empires and possibly even a pirates republic at some point. I'm guessing records were lost rather than destroyed. Copies of pre-Ashford ownership maps exists and established settlements are marked on them. Perhaps those would be a starting point?" A logical course of action the way she thought. Derek Tenpenny

He was thinking and then spoke. "Do you think it's a lineage thing, like ashfords before ashfords owned it and no one just knows it?" He did not know much but he was always wondering if people's history stayed in the family and just got washed away. Xanthe Wingard

Xanthe mused over what Derek suggested. It might be possible but it would mean an older family link here going back quite a while. "Perhaps the Ashford's are the latest family in a chain of influence and ownership? You'd have to do quite a bit of hiding to keep a secret like them always being there. It's worth looking into ownership records to see who owns the old town for starters as there hasn't been a lot of development prior to the Ashford purchase. Development does lead to an historical records but I don't think that line of enquiry will lead to a Scooby Doo adventure" she replied. Derek Tenpenny

He listened and then laughed. "You are probably right but I always find it interesting what was before how any place became what it is now. Maybe the ashfords just seen the vision we are standing in now and wanted to give everyone something nice to be able to look forward too." Xanthe Wingard

“Didn’t every place start small? Then you get urban spread so it could happen here as well. I think you’re right and compared to other islands in the region things look so much better” Xanthe mused. “Give this island another generation the city will stretch further west and east. I hope that history dosen’t get wiped out in the process” she added. That eastern fishing village could be absorbed too given enough time. Derek Tenpenny
