"Thank you and come again," he said. He had snagged a job up but he also knew that sometimes you still had to get out and know people and so far he had not had that chance yet so he was handing out the coffees once they were paid for as a part of his job. (open)

“Coffee for Alice” she heard from another part of the coffee bar. Just like a Starbucks you didn’t get your coffee right away but still quickly. These days she looked more like a cop but not a uniformed one of the Ashford PD. A detective still needed to look different from an office worker but if you looked just right you’d spot the bulge of her pistol in its shoulder holster under her suit jacket. Cases had continued with Francis and sometimes they had to split up to check leads and to take statements. “I’m Alice” she called back to Nick. Nick Mire

"I"m Nick," he said. "Nice to meet you Alice, hope that your drink is up to par but if not let me know still new at this so I am bound to make mistakes." He was not perfect by any means but he did try his best which meant he still did make mistakes. He never hurt to have a conversation with either. Alice Seraphim

This was closer to the expected weather you’d get on this island. The near spring day was warmer than winter but not as boiling as summer was. The sky was blue and fairly cloudless so she could keep the top down on her jeep. “Thank you Nick” Alice replied as she added a lid and cardboard sleeve to her paper cup. Then added “we were all new at some point but this is what I asked for. I’ve done serving work before but that was army food. A very different sense of scale to most things you’ll find here”. He looked younger than she did but she was doing a lot of work for her age that wouldn’t usually happen elsewhere. “Believe me. Everyone was a food critic but I think the alligators got most of the river fish before they were even caught”. Nick Mire

"I can take criticism fine, just want to be good at my job. I know that sounds weird because this is some of the most demanding work ever but I take pride in my work maybe sometimes a little too much if I am being honest." It was a good location at least. "Army food?" He could not even imagine the taste. "Was it good at least?" Alice Seraphim

Alice never added milk or sugar to her basic filter coffee or expresso.. She liked it the way it came naturally as she listened to what Nick had to say. “I’m a cop so know about criticism”she replied. She also knew any food was better than a MRE so added “he had an impossible job but it was better than ration packs. At least the personnel could get out on leave and eat something better”. She couldn’t so that left her with mess food and occasional bring backs from her aunties. She could easily say that while she had been in confinement while in the armies care she could go anywhere on base. So learned how to shoot, drive, cook, fix things and the basics of first aid. Just by acting cute during her free time after home schooling. Thus joining the security services mostly trained. It was the time before she’d rather forget about but couldn’t. Nick Mire

A cop and a server having a conversation was honestly most normal to him. "Oh wow and you have time to stop by here?" he asked. "The crime here must be low then?" he asked as he decided to step out and take a stretch. "That makes me feel good about living here soon then." Alice Seraphim

“You make time when you need coffee to keep going. The crime in this city is pretty much like any US city. The main difference being much less of a gun problem and no organised crime” Alice responded sipping her capped coffee. So he still had to worry about being mugged or pick pocketed but the chance of a violent crime leading to death was possible to slim. There was still homocides given the gangs in the slums, various criminal and smuggling operations and people trafficking. “You can still feel good about living here if you are careful” she added seeing him get his break. A police department in Florida might have employed her given the chance but they wouldn’t have known about her given her identity and records were erased by shadowy government agencies. She wasn’t even sure of her own name but she did have a purpose here. “So apart from serving out coffee and snacks what do you get up too?” she posed curiously. Nick Mire.

"Not much yet," he said. "I have a few things booked however so it's not like I am going to be without much to sit around for long. My job actually allows me to get to know people and ask around about what other things there are to do here which sounds boring but it gives me a good insight." He knew that did not mean much but it did give you information. "I think the first thing that I am planning to do myself is hit that water though it's too beautiful to pass up too much." “If you want to do something with water there are plenty of options. Some former fishing boats are now being used for private sea fishing or diving tours and you’ll find them all round the island. A quick drive either east or west will find you a fairly quiet bit of coastline to explore and sea to jump into” Alice advised. “Also make sure to go to the farmers market if a chance presents itself. It’s where the local produce including fresh fish ends up and I shop a lot there myself” she helpfully added. He appeared to be normal at least but he would get used to the weirdness soon enough. "Thanks," he said. "You seem to know a lot you've been here a while?" he asked. Her job did not sound easy but he had knew people who had a job and easily located elsewhere. It was not hard but it was something that everyone had to decide for themselves. "Oh yes I seen that farmer's market set up already, will be heading there in a few days, can't wait." Alice Seraphim

"I've been here quite a while. Every part of the island has its own challenges but I'm seeing a lot more of it as part of my duties. You'll find Ashford PD in every little settlement and fishing village and some day I might end up out there away from the city. Right now I'm still at the heart of the action" Alice replied. If her duties did change that would affect Lucas and her children as well but perhaps living in what you could call the country part of the island would be better even if you missed the sea. "Well it seems like so far it is working, though the fishing villages I have not gotten around to any of those yet." He always thought that might be cool just a place for someone to be themselves and just chill out and do things to supply themselves. "At least you are doing good for the community no one can say that is not happening." Alice Seraphim

Alice could equate what the island was currently like to a US state. They could set their own laws up to a point but there was other influencing factors that affected their view of nationhood and their place in the world. There was plenty she could tell Nick about the dangers on the island and even her suspicions about external threats but it was the simple thing to smile a little and say “as long as you are careful you should be alright on this island. They’ll be something you can explore later on. I do try and I have plenty to fight for. This community has to work to give my kind a chance of living peacefully with their neighbours. I know how bad things can get first hand”. She certainly did know that but now the was the chance of a better future. Nick Mire

"Bet your job never has a slow day in that case," he said. He could honestly understand why someone would fight to protect family and anything related to it because at the end of the day it was all we had. "I promise I will try to stay out of the dangerous parts or if i see something shady going down I can let you know yeah?" Alice Seraphim
